Fresh baked “Fong Bao” from the oven – 方包出爐

Random musings & meditations straight from the oven. Hopefully some food for thought as well…

Fong Bao’s Aventures Olympiques (F.BAO) – A day about life

(* = Lingo alert)

It was truly a day of mixed emotions.

This morning I went back to the bakery* to watch a portion of the torch relay where former Vancouver mayor Sam Sullivan had his time with the Olympic flame. Despite a last minute detour due to an anti-Olympic protest, the torch made it passed Commercial Drive amidst a crowd of well-wishers. It was an eye opening experience to see the local community showing their support and enthusiasm for someone who managed to achieve so much in life despite a tragedy in his youth. I left The Drive feeling inspired and was “stoked” about the next two weeks.

Then came the sudden and tragic news of the Georgian luger who crashed and lost his life before he had a chance to fulfil a dream he has worked so hard to achieve. As news filtered through, there was a sense of loss amongst all the volunteers on duty today even though we don’t know him. The Olympics created a community and many of us now gathered to remember a precious life lost so early.

While the 08 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony left me in awe and amazement, what took place tonight at B.C. Place was a celebration as well as an appreciation for the origins, diversity and uniqueness of Canada. The Beijing experience was about grandeur and impressing the world. The Vancouver experience was about speaking to the individual and conveying a message that’s personal.

I leave you with the part of the ceremony that spoke to me deeply; on a day when life was both celebrated and mourned. (Ordinary Miracle – Obviously not the actual Olympic footage.)

It’s not that unusal

When everything is beautiful

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

The sky knows when it’s time to snow

Don’t need to teach a seed to grow

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Life is like a gift they say

Wrapped up for you everyday

Open up and find a way

To give some of your own

Isn’t it remarkable

Like every time a raindrop falls

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Birds in winter have their fling

Will always make it home by spring

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

When you wake up everyday

Please don’t throw your dreams away

Hold them close to your heart

‘Cause we’re all a part of the ordinary miracle

Ordinary miracle

Do you want to see a miracle?

It seems so exceptional

The things just work out after all

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

Sun comes up and shines so bright

And disappears again at night

It’s just another ordinary miracle today

It’s just another ordinary miracle today
